Set into the hillside of Big Sky, Montana, the Switchback Residence is a modern mountain home designed to connect with the land. Inspired by the winding lines of a hiking trail, the home’s roof and layout follow the natural contours of the site, stepping with the slope rather than sitting on top of it. This three-story home is oriented to capture panoramic views of Lone Peak and to bring in ample natural light, while staying low and unobtrusive within its surroundings. Interior and exterior spaces flow together easily, encouraging engagement with the outdoors in every season. Materials were chosen for durability and character—concrete, wood, and steel come together in a palette that feels both rugged and refined. While the home offers all the comforts of a modern retreat, it’s also energy-conscious and grounded in place. The result is a home that’s quiet in form, thoughtful in function, and rooted in Big Sky.
