TFPS Addition and Renovation

Three Forks, Montana

The Heart of the Community

The School District Voters approved 2 bonds for improving the existing school facility as well as adding needed facility space.  One bond was for the High School District in the amount of $15 million.  The second bond was for the Elementary School District (which includes middle school age students – K-8th grade) in the amount of $10 million.  The project items identified in the bond language used for the election, is the basis of our project scope and can be broken down as follows:

As the enrollment grows and the existing building infrastructure ages, the K12 building needs additional space and updated infrastructure along with safety upgrades. In working with the Three Forks School District, 45 Architecture developed the program list of spaces and then implemented those spaces into the existing building and new addition areas.

Elementary School District Scope:

Accommodate growth and address safety concerns; Add new secure elementary and middle school entrances; New classrooms; Flex space for music and art classrooms; Renovate existing space to create new District administration space; Renovate special education and support spaces; Renovate music practice rooms; Replace aging infrastructure; Upgrade mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; Install fire suppression system throughout the entire building; Site improvements in moving bus lanes and emergency fire access to the north of the school; Add new parking lot; Install sidewalks and curbs to meet ADA requirements; Relocate playground equipment

High School District Scope:

Accommodate growth and address safety concerns (Expand FACS classroom to accommodate a typical class size, Elevator to basement, Upgrade restrooms and locker rooms in basement for accessibility); Add a new secure high school entrance and common space; New classrooms; Expand the cafeteria; Renovate the existing kitchen; Renovate existing Special Education and support spaces; Renovate art classroom; Renovate district and school administration offices; Replace aging infrastructure; Upgrade mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; Install a fire suppression system throughout the entire building; Site improvements to moving bus lanes and emergency fire access to the north of the school; Add new parking lot; Install sidewalks and curbs to meet ADA requirements

The multiple existing entries around the building make it difficult to distinguish where one should enter and the combination of parent drop-off and busses on a public street has created many safety issues. Resolving these two issues were prioritized by the Design Team and Building Committee. The solution the Design Team chose was to move bus pick-up/drop-off to the north of the building, move parent pick-up/drop-off to NE lot and create additions at the three newly designated entries (one for each of the three schools) with the same architectural language and materials but with easily distinguished identifiers. The new entries also resolve the security issue of not having secure entrances that require visitors to check-in prior to entering the building.

The building has been reorganized to better serve the different schools with minimal crossings except where a room serves multiple schools. A two-story classroom addition was created to accommodate the high school and the existing high school will be heavily renovated to update electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems and will house shared middle school / high school classrooms and District offices. A single-story addition will be added to the elementary school to house new classrooms and the Elementary administration areas and entry. Two classrooms will be added to the end of the existing middle school.
